FISHY FUN...and LEARNING, too

On Monday, Super Dad had a uniquely Southern holiday so we spent his day off from work getting things done around the house but mostly enjoying some family time at PetsMart. Yes, we are an easily amused family. Why spend megabucks at Disney or on some cruise when you can just let your kids loose on a local pet store? ;)

Since D had turned 10 last week, and has been showing great growth in his character, we decided he was ready to take on the responsibility of caring for pet fish. We loaded up the whole menagerie (AKA our family) and headed up to our favorite shopping area. After letting D spend bday money on a new Star Wars game boy game while Girlie Mom & B bought too-cute accessories at Claire's, we headed over to that place of delight for pet owners.

Super Dad and D spent copious amounts of time picking out just the right fish and aquarium stuff and Girlie Mom escorted the other munchkins around the store as they oohed and aahed over all the critters plus the cool pet paraphernalia and water fountain. Of course, since we're a homeschool family, teaching opportunities had to be taken advantage of so we read about the eating habits of water dragons, talked about taking care of fish, and discovered species that we never knew existed.

This was Baby M's first visit to PetsMart since she's quit being a wee thing, so it was especially fun seeing her reaction to everything. She loved the BIG dog and cat statue near the front of the store and never once fussed about being in her stroller...she was just having too good of a time taking in all the bright colors and amazing animals.

Here are a few photos from our outing:

T. was fascinated by the very cool water fountain.
L loved seeing the lizards and finding out fun facts about them.
B is attracted to all things of beauty and loved the diversity of the tropical fish.

After B carefully held the fish in their bag for her brother on the long drive home, the girls and I got lunch on the table while Super Dad helped D get his fish ready to live in their new home. After lunch, getting to go watch Anakin, Padme, and Obi-wan swim about and explore their watery world was the best dessert they could have asked for...and a whole lot healthier than cake or cookies!

So far, the trio of goldfish have all survived the transition and no little brother or sister have managed to dump out the tank. ;)
